B-USEFUL will contribute to the achievement of the ambitious policy objectives set by the EU Green Deal and the Biodiversity Strategy 2030 by developing user-oriented tools and solutions to conserve and protect marine biodiversity, effectively building and improving existing European data infrastructures and governance frameworks.
Horizon Europe, B-Useful, user-oriented solutions
The overall objective of B-USEFUL is to co-develop a suite of solutions and decision support tools that enable end-users to identify and visualize areas of particular importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services. This will ultimately prioritize conservation efforts in biodiversity hotspots or other high-risk areas requiring a more stringent degree of protection. To achieve this overall objective, B-USEFUL will pursue the following objectives, which serve to inform and improve marine management and governance frameworks for the protection of biodiversity in European seas within the broader context of ecosystem management and marine spatial planning:
Develop a set of operational biodiversity indicators and targets that take into account end-user needs and policy objectives
Assess the status and cumulative impacts on marine biodiversity and related services
Identify sensitive species, habitats and ecosystems that are particularly vulnerable to cumulative human impacts and biodiversity loss
Simulate the state of biodiversity and its associated services under various future scenarios of climate change and human pressures
Interactive and online co-development of decision support tools suitable for informing marine spatial planning
