SEAwise is a dynamic research program aimed at understanding the current state of fisheries management across Europe and facilitating the implementation of ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) in the region. Through a focused research program and in close collaboration with the existing stakeholder network, the program aims to develop a fully operational and concise management advisory tool that highlights the benefits—or potential trade-offs—of fisheries management decisions.

Horizon Europe, SEAwise, Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management

The EU-funded SEAwise project will address the need to increase fisheries benefits while reducing ecosystem impacts under changing environmental conditions and increasing competition for space. The network of stakeholders, advisory bodies, and scientists will improve forecasts of stock productivity through environmental parameters, density dependence, predation, stock health indicators, and habitat extent. Furthermore, multi-species and multi-fleet models will provide ecosystem-level forecasts of the impact of fisheries management measures. SEAwise tools and training for stakeholders and decision makers will ensure these methods are directly applied in the waters of the Mediterranean, Western Europe, the North Sea, and the Baltic Sea. The forecasts will feed into an online advisory tool, highlighting the social and economic impacts and management trade-offs specific to stocks and fisheries.
