Biography:
Matteo Egiddi has an interdisciplinary background in marine sciences, aquaculture and analytical chemistry. Growing up on the coastline of Rome, his early interest for marine life evolved into an international scientific career. Matteo earned a B.Sc. in Marine Science and Ecology from Griffith University (Australia), where he specialised in ecosystem connectivity through extensive fieldwork across tropical environments. Returning to Europe, he obtained a M.Sc. in Aquaculture and Fishery at the University of Algarve (Portugal) and acquired hands-on experience in commercial fish farming. Through successive academic and industry-based experience across Europe, Matteo specialised in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) engineering, metabolomics of bioreactors, aquafeed formulation and environmental impact assessment. In 2022, Matteo was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie doctoral fellowship at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany) within the project “RASOPTA”, conducting research at the Fraunhofer Institute (IVV). In his PhD, Matteo combined advanced sensory analytics (GC–MS/O, PTR-ToF-MS) with aquafeed formulation, feeding trials and biochemical assessments to investigate exogenous odour-active compounds affecting fish welfare, organoleptic quality, and economic sustainability of RAS production. Matteo joint COISPA Foundation in 2026 as Project Officer and Researcher. His work integrates biotelemetry, biochemical analyses, and multiple welfare indicators to study fish health in relation to climate-adaptive aquaculture. He collaborates within pan-European consortia on organic aquaculture diversification and marine ecosystem services.
